Win at Smith

Bates played a great game on Saturday against Smith coming out with a 4-0 victory. We had more shots on net than we probably have had in any game all season, so hopefully we can turn those shots into goals this weekend.
Come watch us play UMaine on Saturday at 3pm and Westfield State on Sunday at 12:30!

In case you havent heard yet, we are no longer hosting a tournament this weekend because Alaska, Slippery Rock, and Maryland all bailed due to financial reasons.

UMaine is still interested in playing us so come see us play them this Friday night.

MIT

Thank you to all the parents, alums, and parents of alums who came to MIT to support us this weekend. It was great to see everyone and it was great to get another win! The next time you see us play it will be 2011 and we will have our co-captain Shauna back with us.

UConn and Smith weekend

It was a fun weekend at Underhill when we hosted UConn and Smith. The UConn game ended in a gut wrenching loss (3-2), but we played the best we have all season and the last 45 seconds were really exciting. The Smith game was slightly less exciting but fortunately resulted in an 8-0 win. (Emily scored 4 goals!!!!). Chelsea and Catherine both contributed to the shutout and everyone played really well.

This coming Saturday we have an away game at MIT at 5pm. Those of you in the Boston area should come check us out!

Away Weekend

Bates had mixed results this weekend defeating Fairfield 13-2 and losing to UMO 3-0. Sammi scored an impressive 4 goals on Saturday followed closely by Emily with 3. Kathleen scored 2, and Jo, Chelsea, and Diane each had one. Catherine played a great game in net and helped us keep our lead throughout the game.
Despite the plethora of penalties while playing Maine, Bates played a great game and is ready for our rematch at the end of January. After Thanksgiving break, we have 2 upcoming home games to end the fall semester.

Great Start

Bates got off to a great start to the season defeating Fairfield 10-1. Sammi got us off on a roll with the first goal of the season. Seven other goals were scored in the first period followed by one in the second and one in the third. Other goal scorers were Jo with 2 goals, Eve with 2 goals, Sarah, Kathleen, Kat, Zaihra, and Alison. Congrats to the ladies who scored their first goal ever!

We play Fairfield again this Saturday followed by a game at UMO.

Congrats to Lauren Slipp for making 1st Team All-American. Lauren will also be headed to Europe on Friday as part of the ACHA Women's Division National Select Team (more info here.) In addition, four Batesies -- Diane Brackett, Rachel Laaff, Kara Sullivan, and Lila Totino -- were named Academic All-Americans. Bobcats on a Roll

The Bobcats earned two big wins this weekend over Smith (6-0) and UConn (5-2). After beating Smith 5-1 last weekend at home, Bates traveled to MA for a rematch. Kara Sullivan '10 opened the scoring with 4 minutes left in the first period, and Sammi Landino '13 scored just 17 seconds later on a breakaway. Sullivan got her second goal of the game halfway though the second period. Shauna Mulvihill '12 stepped up on forward and earned a goal, while Kathleen Boyland '11 scored two in the third to bring the final score to 6-0. Lauren Slipp '10 had three assists in the win, and Kailey Worboys '13, Annie Cravero '13, and Boyland chipped in with one apiece. Chelsea Bolton '12 played a solid game in net for the shut-out.

Bates continued their winning streak with a 5-2 win over UConn at home on Sunday. Down 1-0 late in the first, Liz Lawson '13 found the back of the net with 43 seconds left to tie the game. Bates came out hard in the second and took the lead again thanks to Nola Palombo '10. UConn fought back with a goal of their own, but Lauren Slipp '10 put Bates back on top with 4 minutes left in the second. Rachel Laaff '10 added a powerplay goal at the beginning of the third, and Kara Sullivan '10 had a nice tip in to end the game at 5-2. Slipp earned three assists, and Sullivan, Jenny Tu '13 and Sammi Landino '13 each contributed one. Chelsea Bolton had another great game in goal to secure the Bobcat victory.

Weekend of Mixed Results

Saturday, the Bobcats traveled to Burlington, VT to take on the University of Vermont (UVM) Catamounts. After enjoying views of the frozen Lake Champlain and doing some rink hopping, the Bobcats came out strong and led 1-0 after one period. Difficulties in the final period resulted in UVM securing a 4-1 victory.

After returning home after a long road trip, Bates came out roaring at home against Smith on Sunday, dominating control of the puck. Scoring contributions by many first-years led to a 5-1 victory for Bates.

Next weekend, the Bobcats will travel to Western Massachusetts to take on Smith again before returning home to face UConn.

UVM Game Location Change

Showcase Results

In a hockey-filled weekend at Underhill Arena, the Bobcats gave their home crowd plenty of excitement as they competed and hosted the showcase tournament. Friday evening, Bates fell to the University of Maine, 1-5, in a non-league game. Eve Boonseng '11 provided the Bobcats' lone goal as Kristy Zera '12 minded the net. Saturday afternoon, the Bobcats met their first competitors from Delaware Valley, defeating the University of Maryland 7-3. Sunday morning, the Bobcats were down 1-2 against American University, but came back with less than a minute left in the game to tie things up 2-2. The score remained tied after overtime. Concluding her season in style was Eve Boonseng '11, who will soon be leaving Maine to study abroad in South Africa.

Thanks again to all the teams for coming to the showcase, especially those who had a long trek to make.

Showcase Tournament T-Shirts

As we wrap up first semester, we're looking forward to hosting the showcase tournament in January. At this event, we'll be selling tournament t-shirts for teams and fans. Here's what the shirts will look like:

UVM 3, Bates 1

The Bobcats suffered a hard-fought defeat Sunday, December 6, losing 3-1 to UVM. An exciting first period saw the two teams tied until the 8-minute mark when UVM opened the scoring. UVM made it 2-0 with only 4:30 left to go in the second, but Bates fought back with a goal by Emily Bechtold '13 early in the third to pull within one. The Bobcats were unable to capitalize on other scoring chances, while UVM got a final goal to end the game at 3-1.

"Women's Hockey Starts Fast as they Blast Mt. Holyoke and Beat UMaine"

The Bates Women's hockey team got off to a fast start to the season with big wins over Mount Holyoke College and the University of Maine. The Bobcats' record dropped to 2-1 with a loss to the University of Connecticut last Sunday.

The women's club team opened the season with a dominating 7-0 road win over Mount Holyoke. Emily Bectold '13, Kathleen Boyland '11, Shauna Mulvihill '12, Lauren Slipp '10 and Kara Sullivan '10 all scored for the Bobcats. Goalie Chelsea Bolton '12 earned the shutout as she played a flawless game in the net. In a non-league match against the Unviersity of Maine last Saturday, Bates dropped the Black Bears with a resounding 4-1 victory. Racehl Laaff '10 scored two goals for Bates in the team's home opener.

Bates lost its first game of the season on Sunday against the University of Connecticut. Fatigue was a factor as the team traveled four fours to Storrs, CT, to play its second game in less than 24 hours.

The team plays a non-traditional doubleheader with Northeastern this weekend. The teams will meet at the Underhill Arena at 2:30pm on Saturday before heading south the Massachusetts to face off at 11:15am.

The Bobcats lost 4-2 at UConn Sunday. After a well-played but scoreless first period, Bates gave up two goals late in the second. Down 3-0 midway through the third period, Bates fought back with two quick goals by Annie Cravero '13 and Kara Sullivan '10. Sammi Landino '13, Eve Boonseng '11, and Kathleen Boyland '11 all chipped in with an assist. UConn scored once more with 4:36 left in the game to put the final score at 4-2.

Clinic

The Bates Men's and Women's Ice Hockey teams are hosting a youth hockey clinic from Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30 at Underhill Arena. There will be a 6-7pm session for players aged 5-9, and a 7:15-8:15pm session for 10-14 year olds. Both sessions are open to boys and girls, and the cost is $75 for the week.

End of Season Banquet

Last week, our end of season banquet was held. Awards were selected by the team and are:

Anne Mueller was selected by teammates as the 2009 women's recipient of the Dick Williamson Alumni Ice Hockey Award. This award recognizes "leadership, spirit, skill, dedication, humor, and sportsmanship, both on and off the ice."

Also, captains for next year were elected and will be: Lauren Slipp, Kara Sullivan, and Kathleen Boyland.

Northeastern University defeated Bates 11-0 on Saturday and 8-0 on Sunday. Megan Arnold and Kristy Zera both contributed in net to prevent anymore damage.

As we approach the mid-semester break, we'd like to wish Rachel Laaff and Kara Sullivan safe and rewarding experiences next semester, as they'll be away on semesters abroad. The recycling club will especially miss their presence.

Road Games

The Bobcats returned home today after a successful weekend away. Late Saturday night, in a game reminiscent of last season's 3rd place game at Nationals, Bates defeated Columbia 6-5 in OT thanks to a goal by Kathleen Boyland. On Sunday, the Bobcats traveled to Easthampton, MA to play Smith College. Down 2-1 with less than two minutes to go in the third period, Bates quieted the crowd as they fought back and tied up the game. The score remained at 2-2 through overtime. The Bobcats' record now stands at 3-0-1.

2008-2009 Season Begins!

We recently had some technical difficulties posting to the website, but are back in business now just as the season begins.

After a successful clinic with local youth, we began practice on the NESCAC-mandated November 1. After just six practices, we had our first game. On Saturday, November 8 at Fairfield, Bates Hockey began the season with a 13-5 victory at the Wonderland of Ice. Megan Arnold made her debut in net and Kathleen Boyland, Eve Boonseng, Caitlin Demko, Anne Mueller, and Rachel Laaf all contributed with goals. Special congratulations to Kara Sullivan, Rachel Kaplan, and Tess Glancey, who scored their first career goals.

On Sunday, Bates defeated Wheaton College in a friendly exhibition game. Next weekend, Bates makes the trek to Columbia University for a Saturday night game, followed by a game at Smith on Sunday evening.

ACHA Awards

The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) recently announced their All-American selections, a list featuring seven Bobcats. Co-Captain Lauren Slipp was deservedly chosen for the First Team All-American, while Kathleen Boyland and graduating senior Katie Nickerson took Honorable Mention spots. Missing from the list was Eve Boonseng, a Tournament Honorable Mention and All-American in our hearts. Exemplifying the student-athlete ideal, Katie Nickerson, Allie DuPre, Anne Mueller, and Kelley O'Connor were honored as Academic All-Americans.

Bates Wins 3rd in National Tournament!!!

Chicago, IL - After a grueling weekend of hockey, the Bobcats emerged victorious in the ACHA Women's Division II National Tournament 3rd place game to secure the bronze for Bates. Arriving in Chicago seeded #1 in the East, the Bobcats were determined to hold their own while enjoying the experience of Nationals. After obtaining their Athlete Passes, frustrating losses came Friday night and Saturday morning as the teams from Minnesota (Rainy River and University of Minnesota - Duluth) triumphed over Bates.

Saturday evening, the Bobcats defeated the #2 seed in the East, the University of Delaware, 7-1 thanks to major contributions by first-year dynamic duo Kathleen Boyland (#3) and Eve Boonseng (#8).

With their 1-2 record in tournament pool play, the Bobcats faced Delaware for a rematch on Sunday morning to determine the 3rd place finisher. After three scoreless periods, Kathleen Boyland (#3) ended the season with an exciting bang by netting a shorthanded goal in the second overtime to give Bates a 1-0 victory. Seniors Renée Dyer (#31) and Allie DuPré (#22) made the trek to Chicago to round out their careers at Bates in this thrilling game. After arriving back in Lewiston, the team presented their banner to their peers by unveiling it at Commons on Monday night.
